RF stands for radio frequency, and we use this term on set to refer to devices that transmit information wirelessly. This information goes from a Transmitter, TX to a Receiver, RX.
In many instances RF and Transmitter are used interchangeably to denote the requirement of a device to send signal over radio.
Wi-Fi refers to license-free frequencies. The standard channels available are 2.4Ghz, 5GHz and more recently 6Ghz range.
Many transmitters use Wi-Fi frequencies to transmit video signals e.g. Teradek and Vaxis. As do laptops, phones, Bluetooth headsets and lights.
Wi-Fi products are mass-produced and are cheaper than their COFDM counterparts. They are however less reliable and have limited range.
One way to picture Wi-Fi transmitters is to envision a busy car park. Whilst it may be possible to secure parking for a car at a given moment, there is no guarantee that parking space will be available later, or indeed at all.
With the Wi-Fi spectrum becoming increasingly congested, and more devices are being made every day, the demand on Wi-Fi networks continues to grow rapidly.
COFDM is a digital modulation technique for wireless communication that sits within a licensed frequency on the radio spectrum.
Using a COFDM device is like having a dedicated parking space reserved just for your car.
Examples of COFDM transmitters are the Eagle, Nano, Helios and Vislink. These devices are capable of transmitting signals over a much greater range and because they sit on licensed frequencies are not subject to interference in the same way as Wi-Fi devices.
The radio spectrum is an extremely congested space. It’s paramount that you manage frequency allocation correctly to insure everything functions optimally and doesn’t conflict with each other.
